Europeanization Versus the Situation of Women in Turkish Society – an Attempt to Diagnosis
THE AIM OF the article is to answer the question to what extent the situation of women in Turkey has been and is still under the influence of Western values and practices of gender equality. To this end, the author carries out an analysis of Turkish legislation changes in the light of two phases of Europeanization: in the 1920s (with the Westernization programme at the beginning of the Republican era) and at the beginning of the 21st century with the accession negotiations to the EU. Turkey constitutes an absorbing case study in this respect, for its geographical proximity to Central Asia and the Middle East, as well as patriarchal values and social structure, based on gender stereotypes concerning women’s role in the society.
