German Far-left Activists in Warsaw on 11th November 2011
ON NOVEMBER 11TH, German far-left activists, known as Autonome, emerged on the streets of Warsaw. Their participation in disturbances, and even their mere presence in the streets of the Polish capital city that day drew public attention and sparked a debate about the nature of the left wing, anti-fascism and the alleged or real fascism of the part of the Polish right wing. It also contributed to the recovery of the Polish-German resentment for a time. This paper presents, in the first place, post-war evolution of the anti-fascist movement in Germany, leading to the emergence of Autonome. It also presents general public debate, arisen after the presence of the lefties from-upon-the-Spree in Warsaw, taking into account especially voices of environments considered as extreme leftist or rightist.
