The idea of Scandoslavia of Dmitry Likhachev
THE AUTHOR OF this article focuses on an interesting approach to Russian history, culture and geography, which was put forward by Dmitry Likhachev. According to Likhachev, the fact that Russia is located between the North and the South is by far more important than that it lies between the East and the West. Thus, it is more natural to identify Russia as Scandoslavia rather than as Eurasia. This approach affects Likhachev’s other outlooks. He criticizes the ideology of Eurasianism and tries to explain certain facts from Russian history (in particular those which shaped the Russian mentality) in a new way. The author of this article demonstrates that the idea of Scandoslavia is strongly connected with the Westernizers’ movement, a Russian intellectual movement from the 19th century, and that Likhachev’s views are part of the Westernizers’ tradition in Russia’s intellectual history.
