Migration Panic and Migrants Dignity

The aim of so-called moral panics is to effectively influence the assessment of phenomena and the attitudes of individual people. The tools for its induction are media-manipulated information and its uncritical recipients. In recent decades, these efforts have concerned the increasingly intense phenomenon of global human migration. Although it refers to only 3–4% of the total population, it provokes exceptionally strong controversies, creating specific forms of so-called migration panic. Instead of a reliable discussion about migrants and refugees, their rights and obligations, and their inherent and inalienable human dignity, manipulated public opinion perpetuates hardly humane thinking and action. It insults strangers in a dangerously aggressive way against existing natural and positive law, ethical and religious requirements.

Humanitarian Aid Without borders. Polish Military Aid for Starving Ethiopia 1985–1987

Our world is affected by many problems, including wars, violence, natural disasters and hunger. In many cases, humanity is unable or unwilling to cope with the events that have occurred. The obstacles are often spatial conditions, civilizational events, internal and external conflicts, different interpretations and assessments of phenomena, as well as a simple lack of knowledge and empathy. However, in a complicated reality, there are ideas of helping people in extremely dangerous situations, regardless of political or ideological differences. An example of such action outside these limitations and across borders was the humanitarian aid operation for starving Ethiopia in 1985–1987, carried out by Polish soldiers as part of the air operation of the Polish Relief Helicopter Squadron in Ethiopia.

The Liberalisation of Islam: the Case Studies of Western Europe

The article refers to the issue of inclusive Islam, which is examined from the perspective of European experiences related to the liberalization of religion. The aim of the article is to show the development of Muslim thought in its progressive version. The first part discusses the views of individual scholars of Islam, which point to the possibility of progressive interpretation of the Quran and hadiths. Particular attention is paid to feminist and secular issues, as well as those related to queer cases. In the second part, the author presents two case studies related to the existence of liberal thought in Islam: the activities of the Ibn Rushd & Goethe Mosque in Berlin and NGOs in the United Kingdom that work for queer Muslims.

Special Operation and Special Operation Forces – Towards a Holistic Approach

The article assesses the scope of necessary changes in the functioning of operations and special forces in state policy. It was found that the current adaptation solutions for the development of special forces in Polish security policy are inadequate in relation to the increasingly rapidly changing environment of the country. It has been shown that special forces can be not only a supporting but also an independent instrument for conducting state security policy. However, this requires a redefinition of special operations activities and forces at the highest levels of government in the context of civilization change related to the dynamic development of, among others, biotechnology, cyberspace, mass electronic entertainment and private military companies. It was also indicated that there is a need to establish an organizational unit at the political and strategic level that will be responsible for conducting special activities in various areas of state security policy.

The Middle East conflict, or more specifically, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been destabilizing the region for many decades now. With time it became transparent that the bilateral talks of the conflicted actors were not realistic, and a mediator was necessary. Due to the unfolding events of the Cold War and US global domination as a result, the following American Presidents were attempting to bring Israel and Palestine to the negotiation table and resolve the conflict. The efforts have failed. In this paper I will analyze a new idea for the Middle East proposed by Donald Trump and continued by Joe Biden – The Abraham Accords. The new strategy aims at building a bilateral platform for cooperation between Israel and the Arab states of the region. While the initial target for the authors of this initiative was to normalize Israeli-Arab relations and as a consequence, stabilize the region. This paper analyzes the place of Palestine in this Middle East stabilization attempt and its future. In light of the American Abraham Accords initiative, the outcome of a final solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is bleak since it only addresses certain issues like development and promoting living standards (which might be accomplished by building Israeli-Arab relations), but, in the foreseeable future, fails to address the most crucial issues – the future of Jerusalem, Israeli settlement building and the Palestinian refugee crises.

Model of Civic Education in the Republic of Austria

Civic education (politische Bildung) is one of the pillars of a democratic state. Austria, following German solutions, has created its own model of political education. The first part of the article outlines terminological issues in the light of Polish and German literature. Next, the conditions, goals and assumptions of civic education in Austria will be presented, with particular emphasis on its role in shaping civic competences. Further analysis of the Austrian model will allow the formulation of conclusions and recommendations, which may be impulses for further discussion in the face of the internationalization of science and transnational transfer of knowledge and competences, as well as for the implementation of innovative systemic solutions in the field of civic education.

To answer this question, he analyzes the views of, among others, Fernand Braudel, Samuel Huntington and Francis Fukuyama. The conclusions of the paper say that the identity of the West consists of Christianity, Western culture and democracy; however, the author states that this identity is something „ephemeral/ fleeting” both in relation to individual nations and in the lives of the inhabitants of Europe and America.

Psychosocial Mechanisms in the Face of a Limit Situation Based on A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe

The article presents the psychosocial mechanisms of human behavior that are highlighted by a crisis situation. The reference point is Daniel Defoe’s book entitled A Journal of the Plague Year. The author describes with chronicler’s precision the plague epidemic that hit London in 1665 and claimed the lives of approx. 100,000 people. Defoe shows the entire range of attitudes and behavior in the face of an epidemic, from its first symptoms to its end. It presents its social, psychological and economic consequences. All of them could also be observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, which proves the universality of the mechanisms presented by Defoe.

Analysis of Literary Cases of Religious Exaltation as an Example of Mimetism according to René Girard

The article concerns literary cases of religious exaltation, which bear the hallmarks of René Girard’s mimetic theory. The subject of the study are mystical revelations, demonic possessions and religious exaltation, the common denominator of which is a neurotic basis. The cases are discussed using literary examples (Zofia Kossak, Aldous Huxley, Jules Michelet, Gustav Flaubert), but with strong historical roots. Literary experiences are related to the practices of contemporary prayer groups and placed in a psychological and anthropological context. Hysteria and psychoses that take the form of revelations are juxtaposed with cases of real mystical experiences.
