The last slaves in modern Europe – relics of serfdom in Spisz and their abolition in the 1930s

In Polish Spiš, incorporated on 28 July 1920 into the Second Polish Republic, there were three villages (Niedzica, Falsztyn and Niżne Łapsze) which belonged to two related families (the Salamons and the Jungenfelds). These villages were relics of feudalism in the form of serfdom of one of the categories of local peasants referred to as “żelarze”. This problem, solved in two stages in Hungary in 1848 and 1896, in Polish Spiš was not eliminated until 20 March 1931 when a legal act led to enfranchisement of “żelarze” by way of purchase over the next three years.

The family, the opposition and power. The political career of Augustyn Gorzeński in 1764–1793

One of the major challenges faced by king Stanisław August in 1764-1793 was establishing his own political backing. According to some historians, during his tumultuous reign he managed to create and implement a new, informal model of public career. The article is based on conclusions drawn from analysed source material and confirms the scheme using the example of General Augustyn Gorzeński’s political career. He was Poznań Chamberlain and one of the most trusted royal advisors at the decline of the Polish Republic.

Organisation of the Polish State and Society in the Piast Era in the Academic Work of Aleksander Gieysztor and Gerard Labuda

The main theses of the authors concerned the mutual relation between social changes and the formation of state organisation, the militarisation of the Early Piast State (G. Labuda) and the question of the native, pre-foundation beginnings of urban life in Poland. In their research, A. Gieysztor and G. Labuda often used the methods of retrogression and comparison; in addition, G. Labuda appreciated the importance of archaeological findings.

Aleksander Gieysztor and Gerard Labuda as Researchers in Universal History

In concordance with the scholarly profile of the Warsaw historiographical school of the time, Aleksander Gieysztor’s early research, which begun in the 1930s. was devoted to the Carolingian monarchy and the origins of the crusade movement. It was not until after the Second World War that Gieysztor turned his attention to the Slavic studies, conducted from the very beginning by the Poznań historiographical school, to which Gerard Labuda remained faithful throughout his research career. Labuda was primarily interested in Western Slavdom, the origins of Slavic states (Samo’s Empire) and the political and legal aspects of the functioning of early states in Central Europe. Aleksander Gieysztor’s studies on Slavic Europe focused mainly on early medieval Rus’ and on comparative research confronting the phenomena of the history of culture and the history of state and social institutions in Central and Eastern Europe with analogous phenomena and processes known from Carolingian and post-Carolingian Europe.

The first part of the article is devoted to a discussion of Aleksander Gieysztor’s research on the religion and mythology of the Slavs. It discusses the sources of his inspiration (among others the works of Georges Dumézil on the original beliefs and mythology of the Indo-European peoples, the Romans and the Germans; the Parisian ‘Annales’ school) and the achieved results, e.g., the reconstruction of the pantheon of the original Slavic deities. In the second part of the paper, the author reinterprets Gallus Anonymous’ account of the founding of the Piast dynasty.

This paper focuses on the depiction of the Slavs in a work by a French naturalist Marcel de Serres, published in 1814 and entitled Voyage en Autriche. This work is an example of the analysis including a very detailed reflection on Slavdom, made in time of the increasing political engagement of Napoleonic France in Southeastern and Central Europe. The author of the work deliberated on the character of the Slavs and their presumed national unity, simultaneously searching for the ways to explain very apparent differences between various Slavic populations. According to Marcel de Serres the Slavs of the Habsburg Monarchy formed two geographical branches (western and oriental) and were divided into seven principal races, and twenty-seven “secondary branches”. Voyage en Autriche depicted regularities, which were supposed to characterize all of the Slavs, but Marcel de Serres devoted much attention to some details which were considered as exotic and later were described by the writers of the Romantic period fascinated with the Slavic culture.

The cemetery in Navaria near Lvov: research into the Polish national heritage in the lost Eastern Territories

Cemeteries are important sources of information on local and regional social history. Historic sepulchral objects, typically located in cemeteries (crosses, headstones, tombs, grave chapels), with well-preserved inscriptions and epitaphs, are also important source material in genealogical research. Today, of special importance is documenting the survived objects of sepulchral art in cemeteries located in the Eastern Territories lost by Poland. This article is an attempt at presenting the events and names of Poles who lived in Navaria near Lvov, a town later transformed into a village, based on the old crosses and headstones which have survived in the local cemetery, together with other source materials. There are few objects commemorating Poles in the historical part of the cemetery in Navaria where Poles were buried until the mid-1940s. In the past several decades, a majority of the Polish graves were destroyed. The remaining ones are testimony of Poles’ presence in Navaria.

Selected problems of contemporary borderland discourse in Poland. Reconnaissance

The article attempts to summarize the key, in the author’s opinion, threads of the contemporary border-science debate. The point of reference are: Polish literary-centricism, which assigns the main role to literature in shaping the national world-view canon, and the interwar borderland debate, defined by the then geopolitical situation and orientalizing tendencies. Contemporary reflection on Borderlands Studies is mainly focused on developing a more realistic picture of the role of the Borderlands in Polish history.
