The article describes the way of presentation of the Slavs in the Hungarian medieval chronicles. They were only a background for the Hungarians as the subjugated population, therefore the Slavic tradition was generally uninteresting for the Hungarians. The Sclavi were one of the Slavic tribes only, identical to the Pannonian Slavs.

Historiographic initiatives related to the restoration of the Polish Kingdom

The unification and revival of the Polish Kingdom in the late 13th and the early 14th centuries, an event of great political significance, was accompanied by a remarkable development of medieval Polish historiography. It was the first time that historiographic works covered so many parts of Poland, almost simultaneously. In the chronicles produced at that time, great significance was attached to the reasons for the division of the Polish Kingdom, as well as identifying the prince who had the right to unite the Polish state and finally legitimise the royal power. This issue was equally addressed by hagiographical and strictly historiographic works (yearbooks and chronicles). This article deals with devising an ideological programme for the unification of Poland and discusses the various historiographic works in which this programme, formulated in different ways, was taken up. In the case of historiography, the political importance of the revival of the Polish Kingdom is evident both in the number of works on political themes and in the fact that unification ideas appeared several decades before the royal coronation of Vladislaus the Short, which sealed the process, as well as during the unification struggle, and even after the actual revival of the regnum Poloniae.

Ashes and foundations. What the Krakow Cathedral have looked like on 20 January 1320?

The paper focuses on the Krakow cathedral at the time of coronation of Vladislaus the Short (1320). The ceremony probably took place in the western choir of the old cathedral because the western part of the church had been demolished due to some unsuccessful building campaigns.

Obiit rex, or what we know about the death and burial of Vladislaus the Short (in the context of earlier explorations of medieval royal tombs at Wawel)

In 2019, an endoscopic examination of the burial chamber of King Vladislaus the Short, who died in 1333, was carried out in the Krakow cathedral. Before the results of these studies are published, the author has analyzed the written sources regarding the ruler’s death and funeral.

Biological history of Homo sapiens populations living in Central and Eastern Europe

Archaeogenomis is a recently developed interdisciplinary research field that utilizes advanced molecular biology techniques, especially DNA sequencing, to study the history of biological species, including humans. Analyses of ancient genomes provide independent information about human ancestors and their migrations, allowing researchers to uncover history of mankind. Here, we present the fundamental principles of archaeogenomics and its application in the studies of biological history of the populations inhabiting central-east Europe.
