Kalos kagathos as practiced at the court of Casimir IV Jagiellon, or how a „less-thanlovely” Habsburg woman became a mother of kings

This article presents, for the first time, a complete compilation of sources confirming the ugliness of Elisabeth Habsburg, wife of Casimir Jagiellon. It also explains how the authors of the sources dealt with the fact that in Elisabeth’s case, the description anime et corpus (where a beautiful body should correspond to the beauty of the soul) could not be applied.

Another mention of Gallus Anonymous’ cleric and King Bolesław II the Bold

The article concerns a compelling anecdote related by Gallus Anonymous. The story seems to show King Bolesław II the Bold in a good light. However, a detailed analysis of the work shows that, despite the seemingly positive overtones of the story, the historian pointed to the king’s extravagance as one of the reasons for his loss of power, being toppled from his throne, expulsion from the country and death in exile.

The Baroque author of the medieval past of Slavic Germanic cities (a piece on the social functions of regional history and the need of modification thereof)

Historical writing often borders on non-fiction and novelistic fiction. The sparse source base is sometimes supplemented by the imagination of the historian him/herself. The critical scholar confines him/herself to demonstrating that an impressive mixture of legendary themes, folk tales and popular beliefs make up a „mythologised or falsified picture of the past”. The goal is simply to decide who is writing, for whom and for what purpose?
