The policy of the Holy See in Central Europe and the Balkans during the activities of Constantine and Methodius in the Moravian state and the Latin missionaries in Bulgaria

The subject of the article is the policy of the Holy See during the pontificates of Nicholas I, Hadrian II and John VIII with regard to countries in Central Europe and the Balkans. It was the result of the complex relations between the papacy and the Carolingians, the Byzantine Empire as well as the Slavic states. The Moravian rulers (Rostislav and Sviatopluk) and, Boris-Michael, the Khan of Bulgaria, used the interest of the Holy Sees diplomacy in these regions to implement their own ecclesiastical and political plans. An analysis of mutual diplomatic contacts shows more interest in Boris-Michaels state in the diplomatic activity of the papacy than in the Moravian state. The change in the policy of the Holy See took place after the fiasco of making the Bulgarian state dependent on the Church, as well as with the deterioration of relations with the East Frankish monarchy (in ecclesiastical and political matters). This contributed to the growing importance of the Moravian state in the diplomatic activities of Rome in Central Europe (the Gloria in excelsis Deo papal bull).

The Bride Doubravka of Bohemia and the conversion of Prince Mieszko (the genealogical, political and transformational aspects)

The marriage of Princess Doubravka to Prince Mieszko I is a specific example of acculturation in Central-Eastern Europe when Christianity came from Bohemia. It was striving to emancipate its own diocese, further east, to emerging Poland. The study first addresses the genealogical issues of Bolesław I the Braves family and considers the identification of Doubravkas mother (Biagota?, Slavníkovci?). The impulse for the Christianisation of Poland was Prince Mieszkos defeat in 963; he needed military allies while a certain crisis of identity could have arosen („culture shock” – the disfavour of ethnic „daemons”). In his chronicle, Thietmar of Merseburg rather obscured the information about the marriage, through a certain bias against Mieszko, and especially towards his son Bolesław. The baptism took place before the diocese was established; it was a cultural transfer „from court to court”, from Prague to Poznań, perhaps due to the similarities between the Czech and Polish dynastic traditions. The goals of Mieszkos marriage were achieved in 967 (victory of the combined Polish-Bohemian army over Wichmann, birth of Mieszkos son Bolesław).

Duchess Anna Sapieżyna née Zamoyskas busy life. Duchess Annas activity in the Sapieżyński estate

The article concerns certain aspects of economic activities of Anna Sapieżyna, with special emphasis placed on the territories of Congress Poland and Taken Lands on the east of the Bug river. The author focuses on the financial situation of the landed properties and how the duchess managed them. Anna Sapieżyna (1772–1858) was married to Aleksander Sapieha in 1794. In 1799, she gave birth to her daughter Anna, and in 1803 to her son Leon. In 1817, the daughter married A.J. Czartoryski. After the fall of the November Uprising in 1831, the duchess strived to save the family fortune from confiscation by the tsar as punishment for her son and son in laws participation in the Uprising. The duchess managed the rescued properties by herself, and was the sole decision-maker, with the employees only following her instructions. In the landed properties, an early version of crop rotation was implemented. The duchess had a good understanding of the mechanisms of the financial market. The money from the agricultural activities was invested in banks and exchange offices, various European markets as well as bonds issued by Congress Poland, Prussia and Russia. The returns were then invested into land properties in France, the Grand Duchy of Posen and Galicia.

Socio-economic and political activity of Poles in Volhynia, Podolia and Kiev region in 1864–1914. Introduction to the issues

This study revolves around selected aspects of the activity of the Polish community in the Kiev, Podolia and Volyn governorates in 1864–1914. Questions have been asked about the activities nature, scope, directions and conditions, as well as the numbers and social background of the Poles involved in work for the benefit of the country. The extent of Polish socio-economic and political work in Russia at the time largely depended on the policy of the Tsarist authorities towards the local Poles. The efforts made were indicative of their real aspirations and served not only to save Polish property, but also to maintain the national awareness of the Polish community in Russia. After the October Manifesto was proclaimed, the efforts resulted in a number of cultural, educational and publishing initiatives, coupled with the establishment of organisations and associations, and the pursuit of political activity. Interestingly, they were a consequence of the sometimes isolated efforts for the benefit of the country before 1905. After the First Russian Revolution, on the other hand, they evolved into an arena for Ukrainian Poles to express their aspirations. Their elites sought, among other things, to restore their due position in the social hierarchy based on their status and economic power.

“We enjoy frequenting seasonal resorts” – Polish travels to Prussian and German resorts (1850–1914)

This study examines written sources documenting Polish travels to German resorts from the the mid-19th century until the outbreak of World War I. The topic at hand encompasses multiple disciplines, including literary history and cultural anthropology. Among the resorts popular among Poles in the 19th century, Baden-Baden emerges as the most prominent German spa town which attracted the then elite of Europe. It gained its reputation due to the beneficial climate and hot springs as well as a diverse array of recreational activities. As the political situation deteriorated (the Kulturkampf, Prussian restrictions), Polish trips to German resorts came to be viewed in a political context. As a result, a campaign for boycotting „the baths” was launched in the Polish press. Written sources documenting Polish travels to German and Prussian resorts from the 19th and early 20th centuries provide insight into the historical context of the period, and offer a unique perspective on various political, economic, and social issues.

German state children (Staatskinder) of the Evangelical denomination in the colonisation of the eastern provinces of the Prussian state. The orphanage in Ruchocin/Mielżyn 1899– –1918

The article presents the mechanism of the Prussian authorities using „state children” [Staatskinder] in the process of colonization of the eastern Prussian provinces, and combining charity activity with the program of Germanization of the area in question. The actions taken by the Prussian authorities in the late 19 and the early 20th century were in reaction to the internal migration movements, which directly affected the eastern Prussian provinces, from Berlins perspective negatively influencing their national structure. In 1895, Ernst Hasse presented a plan to colonize the eastern Prussian provinces by bringing „state children”, i.e. orphans and illegitimate children from the metropolitan areas of central and western Germany, and placing them in orphanages established in the East. The article describes, among others, one of such orphanages which operated between 1899 and 1918 and was supervised by the Protestant Association for the Care of Orphans in the Province of Poznań [Evangelischer Verein für Waisenpflege in der Provinz Posen].

The image of Dmytro Vyshnevetsky in Ukrainian historiography

The image of Dmytro Vyshnevetsky in Ukrainian historiography has followed the changes in history as an academic discipline. At the time when the Cossack myth was created, historians’ romantic views of the Cossack past resulted in an image of the prince as a noble knight, the Cossack father-hetman, and the founder of the first Zaporozhian Sich. Once positivism made its way to historiography, the activities of the prince were subjected to a more critical analysis, and historians began to question his role of the founder of the first Sich. However, it was not denied that the fortress built by the prince could have served as a prototype for the Cossack Sich. During the Soviet era, three currents in Ukrainian historiography emerged: Soviet, Galician from the Interwar period, and foreign. An ideological confrontation took place between Soviet and foreign historiography, in relation to the assessment of the prince’s activities and the view of the Cossacks. In the 1990s, censorship was liftem and Ukrainian historians gained access to archives. This resulted in a large number of works on the Cossacks. Again, just like 70 years before, there was a need for the emergence of national awareness (based on the Cossack myth), so in addition to purely academic investigations with a critical attitude towards the work of the predecessors and the involvement of new source material, amateur researchers produced a number of works. By the mid-1990s, the prince had been somewhat idealized in Ukrainian history which stemmed from a search for heroic figures among representatives of the Ukrainian elite in the young Ukrainian state. Since the early 2000s, Ukrainian researchers have been trying to assess Dmytro Vyshnevetsky’s activities in a pan-European context, relying on newly available sources, particularly abroad.

Hacer Topaktaş on Franciszek Piotr Potockis mission to Istanbul (1788–1793)

Reading Ottoman-Polish diplomatic relations leads to a clear conclusion that in the late 18th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had an opportunity to enter into an international alliance as a partner alongside the Ottoman Empire. Topaktaş has not attempted to create hypothetical scenarios regarding the survival or otherwise of the First Republic, but has reconstructed the idea of an Ottoman-Polish alliance in a scholarly manner, drawing on a rich body of historical sources. The publication contains innovative insights from the fields of history, political science and international relations. It takes into account the latest state of research and the results of searches personally conducted by the author. Topaktaş has almost managed to avoid factual mistakes and errors. The scale of the research apparatus used and the high specialisation of the technique of the historian of Polish-Turkish relations makes this monograph a work complementary to the diplomatic relations between the Republic of Poland and the Ottoman Empire. The reader is presented with a convincing argument alternating with a narrative that gives the impression of a reportage on the journey and stay of Franciszek Piotr Potocki - all wrapped up in academic terminology. The author has accomplished the research goals declared in the introduction. I personally believe that Topaktaşs book is a groundbreaking and inspiring treatise on the late 18th century. It is worth recommending to enthusiasts of Ottoman studies, but also to students of history interested in the subject.

“Through a green border to paradise”, or a few remarks on the book “Refugees. Illegal crossing of the Polish-Soviet border in 1918–1939” by Serhiy Humenny

This review article is a critical approach to Serhiy Humennes monograph published in the IPN Publishing House (Warszawa 2022, „Monografie” series, vol, 179, p. 166) concerning illegal migrations across the Polish-Soviet border in the Interwar period. In the course of reading, I have come across many errors of both substantive and technical and linguistic nature. I have also revealed a rather peculiar phenomenon of using an almost unchanged text four times for various purposes. On its basis, a masters thesis has been written, defended at the then Jan Długosz Academy in Częstochowa, published in the form of a subject monograph. In the meantime, however, the author slightly modified the content of the typescript and used it as the basis for conferring the degree of doctor of history at the Faculty of History of the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kiev. Once the dissertation has been successfully defended, a book published in Ukrainian has also seen the light of day

On miraculous literature, epilepsy and other issues raised by Elżbieta Nowosielska in her book entitled “Melancholy, madness and other ‘headaches’ in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th and 18th centuries”

For decades, the history of medicine, healing, medical culture, health, etc. has been fascinating researchers: historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and doctors alike. Researchers in this field use source materials that have been known in science for a long time, often creating a questionnaire of issues and questions that no one has posed so far. Elżbieta Nowosielska’s publication, entitled „Melancholy, madness and other ‘headaches’ in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th and 18th centuries” (2021) belongs to this group of works. It is clear to anyone who has dealt with books of miracles and graces that, on the basis of the miraculous literature, if properly explored, E. Nowosielska would have come close to one of the goals outlined in the book’s introduction – a possibly complete picture of the approach to madness or melancholy. The author underestimated the effort made by Jowita Jagla, a researcher into the books of miracles and graces, and the votive offerings, who discusses issues related to epilepsy in her work, and disregarded several other texts. This does not speak very well of the search she carried out.
