Around the election of archbishop Wincenty of Niałek

Upon the death of Archbishop Henryk Kietlicz in 1217, an alliance of the Piast Dukes was established, supported by the papal Curia. The dukes thus installed their own candidate as the archbishop, despite the resistance of the supporters of the late metropolitan, who feared that his work would not last.

Nobles’ acts of betrayal and the rotation of the ruling elite in Wielkopolska in the era of the reign of the descendants of Władysław Odonic

The paper discusses acts of disloyalty in which noble house of Wielkopolska participated. It covers the period until the death of Przemysł II.There are three betrayals mentioned in written sources: that of Tomasz Nałęcz and Sędziwój Zaremba, and the third one, in which both noble houses were reportedly involved.

Apostolic Nunciature without a nuncio in Czechoslovakia of the interwar period

The study deals with the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic (19181938), when the Apostolic Nunciature in Prague was vacant and represented only by chargé d‘affaires, who were in charge of the Vatican embassy. It goes into the details of the events of 1925-1928 and 1934-1935 to explain the reasons, specific situations and consequeces of the absence of the Apostolic Nuncios.

Plans for the Anschluss of Switzerland during the Second World War

Since 1933, when Adolf Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany, to the end of World War II the independence of Switzerland was constantly threatened. Nazi propaganda from the beginning talked about the unification of the German peoples under the banners of the Third Reich. However, Swiss neutrality gave the Germans such great material benefits that it ultimately stopped them before the execution of the annexation plans.

Basic principles of electoral law in the Polish People’s Republic and the Third Polish Republic

This article presents a comparison of the principles of electoral law in the Polish People’s Republic and the Third Polish Republic: political deliberations pertaining to elections in a democratic system and an undemocratic (authoritarian) system. In theory, there were not major differences between the two. The paper does not analyse the very practice of elections.

Dies of the Czech tenth-eleventh-century coinage as a source for the history of the Czech lands

The paper seeks to determine the origin of Emma, whose name was mentioned on coins bearing an inscription ENMA REGINA, and of denarius episcopi, minted by an unnamed bishop. The author concurs with the hypothesis of the French roots of Emma and presents the results of his reading of the inscription on the episcopal coin.

Polish-Czechoslovakian cultural and scholarly relations between 1945 and 1956

Polish-Czechoslovak relations after World War II were marked by territorial and national disputes. Notwithstanding several contentious issues, the cooperation in the field of education, research and education was initiated as early as in 1945. The paper seeks to analyse official contacts of the scholarly and cultural milieus of Poland and Czechoslovakia between 1945 and 1956.

Jaroslav Valenta and Polish historians in the collections of the Science Archive of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Learning in Kraków

The paper presents the relations of Jaroslav Valenta (1930-2004), a prominent Czech researcher of the most recent Polish history, with a number of Polish historians. The picture of these complex relations in the years 1965-1996 has been built up the basis on archival sources.
