Solus cum Deo solo. Pauline Fathers in Medieval Hungary

The purpose of this paper is to present the short history of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit which was following the spiritual lifestyle of the „first hermit”, Saint Paul of Thebes († 342). The paper starts with the description of a foundation of the order in the first half of the 13th century, when hermits started to live in hermitages in the Patach Mountains in the Diocese of Pécs and in the Pilis Mountains in the south-east of Esztergom, and in its major part it focuses on the later development of the Pauline monasteries in the territory of the medieval Hungarian Kingdom.

Burial rituals and funerary services in the Polish community in Lvov in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries

The article’s goal is to highlight burial rituals and funerary services in the Polish community in Lvov in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries as the issues are rarely discussed in academic research. Poles (who prevailed in the city) were typically Roman Catholics. The funerary ritual was modelled by the Catholic tradition. In the last decades of the 19th century, funeral parlours emerged in Lvov to render services to the city’s affluent and poor inhabitants alike.

Eleventh-century cemetery in Morawy

This article deals with the issues of an 11th century grave field in Morawy village in Kuyavia. In the first Piasts times, the area was an integral part of the dynasty’s dominion. Discovered in the 1930s, the grave field is of great importance from the point of view of considerations of ethnically foreign settlement in Poland.

Why is Polish historiography obsessed with the idea of royal coronations of the first Piast rulers? An essay on differences in the perception of royal power and its function in newly converted West-Slavic Lands and Scandinavia

It pinpoints the differences between them and emphasises that contrary to the general understanding, the coronations of the first three Polish kings were not symbols of sovereignty, but dependence on the Holy Roman Empire.

Royal universal was an official document, which was used for mass communication in the early modern Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Act of 5th November and the international nature of the Polish cause during World War I. Comments provided by a diplomacy historian

The author engages in polemics with the thesis that the Act of 5th November was a breakthrough in Poland’s efforts to regain its statehood. However, this declaration of establishment of the Polish state made by the governments in Berlin and Vienna and the Western powers (France and Great Britain) were not able to force Russia to acknowledge Poland’s independence. There was no such need as the other countries wanted Russia to forge an alliance as part of the Triple Entente.

“A bit too late and too little, but at least it’s something”. Poles in Galicia’s attitudes towards the Act of 5th November 1916

The outbreak of WWI offered hope to Poles from Eastern Europe’s Galicia that the so-called Austria-Poland solution would ensue. In the face of military and political weakness of Austria-Hungary, the idea failed to take root. The proclamation of the Act of 5th November 1916 indicated that the Polish state would be reconstructed under the auspices of the Second Reich. This arouse resentment among Poles living in Galicia who had hoped to be united with their compatriots in the Kingdom of Poland.
