He was a veterinarian, zoologist, an outstanding mammalian anatomist, professor, pro-rector and rector of the Academy of Veterinary Medicine in Lviv. He did his studies in natural sciences in Vienna, then in Lviv. He also received a diploma in veterinary medicine. Prof. Kulchytsky’s scientific output includes about 60 publications (compact works, studies and scientific articles, discussions, reviews, etc.). The area of research and scientific interests of V. Kulchytsky was extremely wide and at the same time diverse. He became famous as an outstanding mammalian anatomist and zoologist, creator of anatomical preparations (continuing the work of Prof. Henryk Kadyi). He conducted research work on avian anatomy and physiology, the anatomy and etiology of cattle and horse diseases. He was also involved in parasitology, hippiatry, conducted interdisciplinary studies on the borderline between ethnography and ethnology, was interested in climatology and demography of the countries of the Orient and Central Asia, Indian studies and deep-sea fauna of the oceans. He skillfully combined his collecting passion for carpentry (1906–1936) with orientalist research, becoming an undisputed authority in this field, while amassing the largest collection of old oriental textiles on Polish soil. In 1934 he received an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Veterinary Medicine in Lviv for his outstanding achievements in the field of science and his attitude during the occupation of Lviv by Russia (1914–1915).

Candide in the pitfall. Julian Brun’s long journey from Brussels to Moscow (1937–1941)
Julian Brun (1886–1942) was one of the most recognizable activists of the Communist Party of Poland in the interwar period. His journalism beyond the narrow confines of party debates was highly regarded. An example is his studies of the works of Stefan Żeromski and the national question, which can be seen as an attempt to get closer to the Polish intelligentsia and to take a new look at topics that had been treated uniformly and without subtlety in the KPP until then. Entering the party leadership in the mid-1930s, Brun clearly exposed himself to Stalinist repression, which was to lead to the liquidation of the organization and the murder of its leaders. This, however, did not happen. The text is a study of the situation in which Julian Brun found himself between 1937 and 1941, staying abroad – in Belgium and France – without a party assignment, in constant anxiety about his own future. In addition to reflecting on the biographical situation, the article, written on the basis of documents from Polish and Russian archives, also brings knowledge about the functioning of the mechanisms of the Comintern apparatus.

Father Jerzy Popiełuszko in denouncing reports by secret collaborators of the Security Service
Despite the large number of publications about the figure and activities of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, there is a shortage of reliable academic studies analysing the documentation concerning the priest produced by the communist apparatus of repression. The aim of the present text is to present the reports of secret collaborators focused on Father Popieluszko and an extensive historical analysis of their activities. For the purposes of this text, the work files and personal files of three secret collaborators with pseudonyms were analysed: „Jankowski”, „Kustosz”, „Tarcza/Miecz”. The personalities of these persons and the file references were previously known and mentioned, mainly by journalists, but no solid scholarly work, apart from the files of tw „Jankowski”, has been done so far. The records of tw „Janusz” and the steelworkers „Bogdan”, „Uczciwy” and „Fredek”, which have not been mentioned so far, were also discussed. The basic sources for investigating this issue are the materials produced by the Ministry of the Internal Affairs, above all personal files, work folders and records from card files.

Appreciated by the Sejm. Wojciech Korfanty – Patron of the Year 2023 and his place in contemporary public space
Round anniversaries of important historical events are often a stimulus for an indepth analysis of their historical significance for the fate of individual countries and nations. The above statement also applies to historical figures. One such figure is Wojciech Korfanty, who in many respects played a special role in the recent history of Upper Silesia and Poland. With this in mind, in 2023, when the Year of Wojciech Korfanty is celebrated in Poland, established on the 150th anniversary of his birth, the authors of the article decided to first analyze the path that the motion for adopting a resolution establishing the Year of Korfanty traveled in the Sejm. In the second part, the authors focused on the multidimensional presence of Wojciech Korfanty in public space. By this term we understand such forms of commemoration as monuments, commemorative plaques, patronage of schools and institutions, street names, publications or murals. The analysis carried out for the purposes of the article showed that Wojciech Korfanty, as one of the so-called „Fathers of Polish Independence”, he was fully deservedly appreciated by MPs, and with each year of Independent Poland (after 1989), he also gains in importance as a figure more and more visible in the public space. And although the article did not discuss the implemented initiatives commemorating his figure in 2023, undoubtedly the researcher who will undertake this task at the beginning of 2024 will have rich and diverse source material to analyze.
