Ten years after. Ukrainian political life in Lviv in 1928.

During the mid-war period Lviv was a leading centre of Ukrainian cultural and political life in Polish state. Despite the unfavourable political situation Ukrainian elites tried to create mythologized image of the city as a ”heart and brain” of West Ukraine. In 1928 the opportunities for such actions were, among others, parliamentary elections in March, and - in November - 1st anniversary of the outbreak of the Ukrainian-Polish war.

Vertep.

Vertep is a part of the group of religious representations belonging equally to the church rituals as well as to the follklore customs. It was born with the other mystery plays together having their origins in the iconographic Gospel representations such as ”Christ cribs” in Byzantium and subsequently the performances of the Birth of the Infant such as the famous performance act prepared by saint Francisque from Asis in 1223. Later, the local puppet presentation of ”Nahvity" had developed. They were ”Navidad” and ”Nahvite'” in the western Europe and their counterparts in the middle Europe. Their common origin were the church utensils such as tabernacle or the small cabinet altar called retablo. These presentations in the middle Europe were called ”crib” or ”szopka” while in eastern Europe ”vertep”. The ”Nativity” included the shepherds' homage, the Three Kings) homage as well as the massacre of lnnocents and Herod's punishment. Later on the new secular motifs and characters appeared, representing problems of the folk life. At the time of modernism, real artists showed interest in „Nativity" giving it a new artistic interpretation. Vertep as a variety of ”Nativity” has its own properties and seems to be an independent product of the Ukrainian culture.

Khmelnytsky's uprising written by Aloyizy Honzaha Zhulkovskyi is the first drama about Ukrainian hetman on the Polish stage of the 19th century.

It was created in 1812 and had short stage run but was never printed. Text preserved in the National Museum Library of Warsaw is the earliest drama text of 19th century devoted to Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. The emerging of this text can be interpreted as the beginning of pre-romantic tendencies and rising interest in history of Ukrainian-Polish relations and Cossack epoch. At the same time, the play was as relevant as ever because there exists a strong desire of playwrights to respond to important social and political problems of that time.

Ukrainian theater of the society Ruska Besida was one of the essential components in the development of Ukrainian culture in Eastern Galicia.
Cultural development was also provided by the activities of Ivan Franko. His work for the theater was often underestimated and superficially studied. This was especially true when the rehash of Ivan Franko The Mayor of Zalamea appeared in the repertoire. The history of staging of this play is important to the history of Ukrainian theatre.

Popular theology of human activity and labour in Ukrainian sayings and proverbs.

The author of this article analyses a stratum of Ukrainian proverbs which by its semantic content constitutes a kind of popular theology of human activity and labour. The meaning of a number of paremies reflects the inner world of a religious person, wherein the individuality's development via daily labour is consistent with the plan of providence. According to popular Christian conceptions of God, He provides aid in every deed, word, thought, and wish. In popular religious cultural traditions, as well as in ecclesiastical traditions, rational activity is the aim and norm of all earthly human life; economic activity is included in God's plan, and is considered a positive value.

The woman in Ukrainian historical belles-lettres 1880–1890’s

Ukrainian historical fiction of the late nineteenth century is a strategy which outlines the characteristics of national identity. Presence of a woman in such models has a particular semantic role. In Ukrainian historical novels the feminine role is sometimes projected on the plane of patriarchal axiology and in some cases becomes masculinum under militant discourse of the past. The image of a woman in Ukrainian historical fiction of 1880–1890’s makes it possible to outline the intersection of the colonial and anti–colonial narratives.

First” and "second” poets "Prague school”: the problem of authenticity "evidence reputable artists”.

For decades, the vast majority of literature theorists link the genesis theme in Ukrainian emigration poetry of 1920-1930’5 with the name Y. Daragan, while at the same time E. Malaniuk is considered the greatest poet of the exile. However, today there are no sound scientific studies that would prove the validity of these controversial statements. Often they are allegedly derived from ”evidence of influential artists” of the interwar period : B.I. Antonych and 0. These articles are supposedly given thematic status of ”primacy” among the works of immigrants just south of Y. Daragan collection Quiver. Transformation of the detective narration devices in the Oksana Zabuzhko’s novel The Museum of Abandoned Secrets.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the transformation of the narrative means and devices of the traditional detective novel used for investigating the mystery of woman’s destiny in the O. Zabuzhko’s novel The Museum of Abandoned Secrets. Detective themes in the narrative of this novel are generally recognized in the discourse of this literary work. An over-rational approach to the detective investigation in the novel is closely related to several factors, including the author’s concern with the problems of modern Ukrainian’s national identity. The work analyzed is a postcolonial novel, and this is embodied in all aspects of its content. Mystery of womanhood, heroes’ love relationships, and investigation of mysterious deaths - all this problems are marked by postcolonial perspective. Analysing peculiarities of author’s transformation of tools of the traditional detective narration about ”investigation” of the three heroines’ mysteries we find out several special features. First, the purpose of Daryna’s investigation is “to get ‘story’ out of Vlada’s life”. Secondly the place of insight, enlightenment in Daryna’s “detective” activity is also very specific. Unlike the traditional detective novel, in 0. Zabuzhko’s one the main “tool” of getting an answer is intuitive enlightenment. Thirdly, Adrian’s character is important not only in the explication of the love line of the novel, but also in “investigative” narrative. Adrian is an interpreter of spiritual movements and emotional states of hers.

Between Reality and Myths: Discourse to Occidentalism. Cross-Cultural Reflections and Contiguity Experience.

The issue of national identity study is considered through the lens of such concepts as globalism and Europeanness. Now this aspect of self-conscience is being articulated and discussed especially actively in Ukrainian, Polish, Russian and other scientific reflections. In this regard, the theme of the image of Europe and its derivative concept of Europeanness as a kind of code which is present in these national literatures is actualized. Outlined by the author the receptive image of intuitive Europe which is modified by different models of national mentality is of general importance. For an insight on clearer formation of the image of Europe the author gives examples of its presence in national literatures. Addressing Ukrainian, Polish, Russian scientific reflections the author transforms the issue of intercultural dialogue in the context of national-European into the issue of polylogue of receptive models of identity in a West-East paradigm.

Ukrainian Literature: Between Ukraine and Literature.

This article is dedicated to the anthology Solomon’s Red Star (2012), which contains 25 essays describing 25 administrative regions of contemporary Ukraine. Different rhetorical strategies presented by authors are analyzed from a postcolonial perspective. The most important elements of the postcolonial narrative are a notion of a literature as a mirror of reality and understanding of a narrative as a kind of a travelogue, when the author acts as a guide and the reader is supposed to be a tourist. A narrative is mostly past-oriented but not future-oriented and the main challenge to the authors is that a history is neither coherent nor complete. A post-soviet stereotype-based narrative is opposed by a mythological poetics as a means of creating a new cultural identity.

Precedent names as a means of language games in word-formation (on the basis of Eygen Pashkovsky’s novels).

The object of this article is to illuminate new derivates that were created on the basis of precedent names in novels of modern Ukrainian author Eygen Pashkovsky. Language games in the process of word-formation show a tendency towards democratization in Ukrainian language and disappearing bounds between spoken and literary language. New words that appear on the basis of well-known proper names widen different parts of speech i.e., adjectives, verbs, nouns. Expanding semantics and hyper-expression of author’s neologisms are analyzed in the context of language games. The author of the article suggests that precedent names modified in language game expand their semantics and attract attention due to their form.
