Basics of Greenland political system: selected issues
Greenland, being an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, now confirms its aspirations for independence. In recent years, there is a noticeable broadening of the range of the autonomy of the territory. Currently, the basics of political system regulates Act on Greenland Self-Government of 2009, which primarily focuses on the political and economic relations with Denmark, while setting a road to independence. This independence largely depends since the creation of the financial basis of the existence of a future state. There is no doubt that the system of authorities in Greenland is already adapted to future statehood. This is largely inspired on solutions used in the Nordic countries. Legislative power belongs to unicameral parliament (Inatsisartut), which comes from the general election. It consists of 31 MPs elected on the basis of the principle of proportionality. In addition to the legislative function, it is also control functions and financial function. Executive power is exercised by the government (Naalakkersuisut), which maybe dismissed by the Parliament. Draws attention that the position of High Commissioner, which is representative of Denmark, is essentially representational purposes only.
