The presence of Jews in the representations of Galician cities was both one of the results of the introduction of their equal rights, and its consolidation. Jews present in municipal governments took care about matters relevant not only for their community. They engaged in key projects directed at all citizens, regardless of faith and nationality. The voting system (due to the specific division into circles and curiae) preferred the richest and the best-educated. In consequence, the Jewish community was commonly represented in city councils by those coming from families of assimilated representatives of intelligentsia, merchants and bankers. Obviously, the greatest percentage of white-collar employees could be observed in bigger cities, being seats of courts, barrister’s chambers, notary offices, secondary schools and higher education institutions. Therefore, from that time on, their voice could be heard in the public space and had to be taken into account.

The paper seeks to address a number of questions concerning Marian Szyjkowski’s path to becoming the Head of a newly established Department of Polish Language and Literature at Charles University in Prague. The paper examines Szyjkowski’s life choices and research achievements, and looks at the milieus of Lviv and Kraków that were a formative influence on the scholar.

Cepelix on the Central Square. Citizens of Nowa Huta as folk arts & crafts creators

The goal of this paper is to expose and analyze the contemporary folklore of the industrial discrit of Kraków called Nowa Huta. „City without God”, how it was created and named, played a significant role in the Polish resistant movement during communist times. Stories of that period are crucial for Nowa Huta citizens, first of all for their indentity, but also for district’s image and marketing. Since the post-war times there is a shop „Cepelia” placed in Central Square of Ronald Reagan in Nowa Huta, Kraków. CPLiA (Centrala Przemysłu Ludowego i Artystycznego, what means: Headquarters of the Folk and Artistic Industry) all the communist period long was govermental branch responsible for folk arts & crafts. In fact it was a huge buissnes employing over 20 000 people to design, create and sell folk art which pleased the socialist party. The shop in Nowa Huta was one connected to this network, however after political transformation in 90s of 20th centrury it changed as well. Cepelia became Cepelix. Nowadays (research was conducted in 2014 and 2022) one can find there some folk art, but also modern design connected to the district indentity and history. Paper contains an analysys of this new assortment and tryies to answer the question is it possible to treat it as a folklore as well as the other items being sold there?

The incorporation of Krakow into Austria in 1846 in the light of selected titles of the Austrian and German press. This paper presents the content of Austrian and German newspapers published in 1846 in relation with Austria’s annexation of the Free City of Krakow. These newspapers described the process of annexation and the subsequent internal situation in Krakow. They published official documents such as the Austrian emperor Ferdinand’s manifest and the Austrian marshal Castiglione’s proclamation about the dissolution of the Free City of Krakow. Information is also provided about the attitude of the residents of Krakow and the city’s history. The press speculated about the future of Krakow in the Habsburg monarchy.

„J’ai des yeux de Cracovien”. Jean Van Ghele (1912–1985), French consul in Cracow in the sight of Polish Security Service

The article is a biographical sketch of the biograpy of French consul in Krakow, who served as in the years 1956–1961. The background is the life of Krakow at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the extended and complicated operation of the communist secret police. The text presents broad aspects of counterintelligence activities in the system of an authoritarian state. The context is also the warming in Polish-French relations, which was significant after the turn of October 1956, bringing cultural, scientific and regulatory effects.
