The book by Łukasz Jureńczyk entitled: „The war against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Afghanistan in the years 1994–2012” (original title: Wojna z talibami i Al-Kaidą. Afganistan w latach 1994–2012) presents a broad spectrum of actions that have been taken by the international community and local activists, who set themselves the goal of overthrowing the Taliban groups in Afghanistan and combat the world’s most dangerous terrorist organization – Al-Qaeda. The basis for author’s dissertation was the situation in the country since the seizure of power by Al-Qaeda through a period of keeping it, until the most recent period. Ł. Jureńczyk took into account cultural contexts, the international situation, and the differences in the exercise of power by the terrorist organization and the socioeconomic outline. The reviewed publication was released by Scientific Publishing ‘GRADO’ in Toruń in 2013 and partially funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The book consists of 5 chapters – ‘The Taliban road to power’, ‘The Taliban regime’, ‘The causes of the war against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda’, ‘The Taliban war with AlQaeda” and ‘The attempt to democratize Afghanistan’.

This article examines the use of American military power in the Middle East during the presidency of Barack Obama. While some have characterized those responses as confusing, inconsistent, and/or inadequate in number, this study argues that there is a way to understand and explain Obama’s decisions, the “Obama Doctrine”. The article develops and applies the Doctrine to America’s use of force, or not, in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and elsewhere.

U.S. support for the mujahideen: 1979–1986
U.S. support for the mujahideen was a crucial factor in Soviet-Afghan war. Thanks to American aid the Muslim fighters from Afghanistan could effectively defend themselves from communist forces. The history of Operation Cyclone can also been seen as perfect example of Ronald Reagan’s administration foreign policy and implementation of Reagan Doctrine in practice. It is also worth remembering that origins of support for the mujahideen are deeply connected with Jimmy Carter’s administration, especially to National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski. The 1979 is commonly viewed as year that brought a pivotal change not only in the U.S. policy, but also in whole Cold War rivalry. In that time the Greater Middle East has become the most important region in foreign policy of United States, and it has remained so to this day. History of U.S. support for the mujahideen is vitally important to understanding the Islamic terrorism phenomenon and war of terror, that shapes international relations in the 21st century.

The Role of the Loya Jirga in Shaping Afghanistan’s Political System
In this article, the author presents the results of research on the origins of the Loya Jirga and its impact on the formation of the political system of Afghanistan. According to the author, searching for an answer to the question of what role the Loya Jirga played in the creation of an independent Afghan state and what significance it had in shaping the internal and foreign policy of the Afghan authorities is important for understanding the political processes that took place in Afghanistan in the 20’th century, both in the period of monarchy and communism, as well as the processes taking place in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of US and NATO troops from this country in 2021. The main research method used by the author was the historical method. With its help, the author also analyzed the role of this advisory body in the formation of the Constitution of Afghanistan, which was subject to significant changes in various historical periods depending on the political situation.
