Polish foreign policy in the propaganda of the „workers sector” of the National Unification Party (1937–1939)

The presented article is a contribution to the history of the propaganda of the ruling camp in Poland in the last years before the outbreak of World War II. At that time, international issues became particularly topical and important, which of course was directly related to the dynamically changing political situation in Europe. The presence of the Second Republic of Poland in Polish feature film, shaping the awareness and memory of that period (sketch of the problem)

The article presents the presence of the interwar period as an epoch in Polish films and series created both during the communist period and after 1989. Both those films for which the social and political events of the Second Polish Republic were the main theme, as well as those in which the interwar reality was only a background that added color or was only mentioned, were indicated. The first part of the article focuses largely on theoretical considerations. Then, the socio-political situation in the following decades was analyzed in parallel, as well as the binding guidelines of state bodies regarding the official narrative of the interwar period in the Polish People’s Republic. While formulating the conclusions, the author drew attention to aspects related to the interwar period, which, in her opinion, are lacking in contemporary Polish cinema.

The Wilno Branch of the Polish Historical Society

The Wilno branch of the Polish Historical Society was active from 1925 to 1939. Its purpose was to support the development of historical studies and establish a community of historians and history lovers. The number of members during its existence varied from 26 to 54. At the head of the society operated a board of directors that was elected at the annual meeting of members. Professor Alfons Parczewski was the branch’s Chairman from 1925 to 1933, and from 1933 to 1939 Professor Stefan Ehrenkreutz presided over the board. At the society’s meetings, members would present papers on various historical topics; they would publish works in local Wilno scholarly publications, and they would cooperate with historians from other scholarly centers around Poland. An important event for the Wilno branch of the Polish Historical Society, as well as for the entire Wilno scholarly community, was the VI General Congress of Polish Historians, convened in Wilno on September 17–20, 1935. Some 618 individuals participated in the event. More than 50 scholarly papers were presented, a wide series of important issues were discussed, and various resolutions were passed. The activities of the Wilno branch of the Polish Historical Society were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II in September 1939.

A suburban school with a unique climate and atmosphere. The history of the Silesian Insurgents High School (with Bilingual Faculties) in Dobrzeń Wielki and to emphasise that its collective patron constantly remains in the memory of the school community

The aim of the article is to present the history of the Silesian Insurgents High School (with Bilingual Faculties) in Dobrzeń Wielki and to emphasise that its collective patron constantly remains in the memory of the school community. Considering the fact that 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the naming of the school, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Third Silesian Uprising and the Plebiscite, the projects undertaken by the school’s community in connection with the jubilee are presented. Celebrating anniversaries is an opportunity to present the history of our High School as the first high school in a rural area in the Opole Voivodeship and one of only a few in Poland, as well as to consider the need for such celebrations in educational institutions. The activities related to the anniversary celebrations (related to the patron of the school – Silesian Insurgents) and their influence on the increased interest of our students in the insurgents’ stories and the history of the school were analyzed. The presented initiatives were also a contribution to the reflection on the potential that lies in the mutual relations which take place at school between the members of its community. The relationships that have a decisive impact on how unique and extraordinary our school is. The public opinion has become convinced that it is difficult to involve young people in educational and student-counselling projects. The intention of the article is to show that the atmosphere of trust and faith in the students’ abilities significantly increases the chances of their active involvement in school’s activities.

Not only as the engineer. Gabriel Narutowicz and his activities for the Polish affairs during the First World War

For years, there have been many opinions according to which Gabriel Narutowicz is known only because in December 1922 he was “accidentally” elected the president of the Republic of Poland and then murdered in dramatic circumstances. His professional achievements are very often overlooked in such narratives. The poorly known threads of his biography also include his commitment to the Polish cause during the Great War. And it was then, as a Swiss citizen and a respected engineer with a European reputation, actively engaged in helping Poles staying within the borders of this mountainous country. Narutowicz, about which the article is about, was also an intermediary in providing financial support to Piłsudski’s legionnaires, which in the United States was collected by his friend Aleksander Dębski, among others. Moreover, Narutowicz spoke publicly, including in the press, on the most important issues concerning the position of the Polish cause during the Great War. The text also contains information on other forms of Narutowicz’s activity, who, despite his technical education and numerous duties resulting from his design office and work at the University of Technology in Zurich, was a man with broad horizons and numerous passions, including mountain hiking and music.

By sabre, pen and... stethoscope! Gen. Stefan Hubicki in the border war for Second Polish Republic in the years 1918–1920

The results of historical research sometimes need updating – especially if some valuable new historical resources turn up. This is often the case of 20th century history, where iconographic materials are important, which are being gradually submitted for publication by families. This way valuable information can be revealed about, for example, the hero of this article. Stefan Hubicki is an extremely interesting person – a soldier by choice, a publicist by temper, a doctor by profession. He was a versatilely gifted, openminded man, descended from a family of strong independence traditions. It was at the beginning of 20th century when he was imprisoned by tsarism for subversive activity. During the Great War in the Russian army and later in Polish military formations, he employed all his talents to the effort of rebuilding the independent Polish Republic. He was fighting as a soldier, then as a French intelligence agent in Bolshevik Russia, then working as a publicist and politician in Polish National Committee in Paris. Since spring 1919, back in Poland, in frontlines of border wars he helped soldiers as the chief of sanitary service. For his service he received the highest military medal of honour Virtuti Militari. In meantime his personal life rolled on in the background – highly complicated, because he was in danger of being convicted for bigamy. He was a colourful person, rising above the limitations of his era. Despite of his inconspicuous looks and average height he possessed a leadership charisma.
