The Elimination of Illiteracy in Tomaszów Region between 1944 and 1953

The article presents the changes that had taken place in the structure of post war education system using as an example Tomaszów region. It explains the way in which the communist's slogan "We fight illiteracy” was used to gain support for the new ruling party. Deliberately chosen educational texts were glorifying USSR and condemning the pre-war Poland. The article presents also difficulties that regional authorities had with putting government instructions into practice. All the work undertaken was aimed on aksjological disorientation and frustration of the society.
