On Giving Meaning to Family Life: An Educational Essay

The author addresses cognitively important issues concerning values and activities conducive to their development in the family, which is the basic factor in shaping the personality of a child. We are living in the times of globalization, when the importance of family and values passed on by it are being underestimated in various ways. Globalization has caused an enormous confusion of values. The old, traditional values are often outdated, while the new, incomprehensible ones, interfere with the process of upbringing. Additionally, relativism dominating the society has become the basis for blurring the boundaries between what is moral and what is immoral. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the special role of values in the process of upbringing and to stimulate actions supporting the family through education and prevention. The above considerations lead to the conclusion that the family is an important value in the life of a child. It constitutes their most important environment for development and upbringing. Nevertheless, it requires help and support from the state. But above all, we cannot just be passive witnesses of our children’s development these days.

Slow movement, psychologia pozytywna i dobrostan wobec społecznych wyzwań konsumeryzmu. Czy dobra niepozycjonujące mogą stać się wyznacznikiem prestiżu

Positive psychology successfully takes the first steps to explain what makes people happy, drawing on the tradition of twentieth-century psychology, as well as evolutionary psychology and neuropsychology. In addition, its statements seem to resonate with the philosophical tradition of Far East, which sources of happiness and well-being sees apart from the ‘self ’, denying the individualistic desires connected to the satisfaction of vain ego that demands – metaphorically speaking – honors and immediate pleasure. However, with its ideas positive psychology perfectly fits into current commercial philosophy of ‘slow movement’, which encourages people to find joy in everyday activities, focus on self-development, derive satisfaction from small pleasures, cultivate their hobbies and social contacts. Because ‘slow movement’ is firmly connected with the specific kind of market, therefore, though positive psychology suggests distancing from the issues of material problems, it becomes – as if in spite of itself – another positioning value, which only determines the status of individuals.

Theoretical Framework for the Development of Community Sense

The paper focuses on the quite original and not much discussed subject of the relationship between volunteerism and community sense, whose support in Czech society has great potential for the development and functioning of a humane-oriented civil society. First, the paper depicts both concepts and capacity of volunteering utilization in the development of the community sense. Then it emphasizes two promising ways of volunteering support that take into account the educational and developmental context. These are the development of prosocial values and positive shaping of youth happiness. As the presented findings indicate, the individual happiness impacts on both the individual’s prosocial orientation and willingness to volunteer that is enhanced also by prosocial values.

The primary purpose of the research was to investigate the effect of psychological safety on the silent behaviour of academic staff with the mediating role of happiness. This research was descriptive-correlational regarding the data collection method. The statistical population was all employees (administrators and teachers) of public schools in Tehran, of whom 373 persons were selected. The questionnaires included a “psychological safety” questionnaire by Edmondson (1999), a researcher-made questionnaire on “silence behaviour” according to the Vakola and Bouradas questionnaire (2005), and “happiness” by Oxford (1990). Descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation coefficient and structural equations modelling tests) were used to analyse the data. The results showed a positive and significant relationship between psychological safety and the employees’ happiness. Findings of the structural equations modelling indicated that the direct effect of psychological safety on silence was -0.61, and psychological safety with the mediation of happiness reduced to silence by -0.77. It could be concluded from the results of this research that happiness has an important effect on reducing organisational silence, and this research would provide a theoretical reference for managers to take comprehensive measures to improve happiness in the organisation.
